Four people are still missing, including a couple from Austria, Greek Civil Defense Minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Greek television (ERT). On Saturday evening, the Pineios, one of the largest rivers in central Greece, flooded. As a result, the main road between Athens and the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki was closed along a 70-kilometer stretch near the city of Larisa, police said.
The waters of the Pineios River reached the outskirts of Larissa, the regional capital of the province of Thessaly, on Saturday morning. However, no people are in danger, reporters from Greek radio ERTnews report. Search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas of central Greece around the towns of Larisa, Volos and Karditsa continued overnight using inflatable boats, tractors and tracked vehicles.
In the port city of Volos, which is largely covered in mud, intensive work is already being done to restore the water and electricity supply. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had inspected the regions affected by the floods the day before. He promised people fast and unbureaucratic financial help. (SDA)
