“It was a great time!”: Lottery winner from England squandered her millions in winnings – and regretted nothing

It was an indescribable feeling for Lara Griffiths (53) from England when she and her husband won about two million Swiss francs in 2005. But it wasn’t really tangible: ‘Imagine someone telling you that you now have two million in your account.’

She even told the Daily Mail that the experience was “shocking”. But she was “tired of her story being portrayed as tragic.” Her own conclusion is positive: “It was a great time.” However, since she won, she has often been portrayed as “a stupid woman who squandered all the money.”

Economy flights and used cars

In fact, the money is now gone, but she certainly didn’t waste it! “People used to say I was stupid, stuffed with plastic surgery, and that my kids should be taken away from me.” But the 53-year-old is not going to let that happen. “The fact is, I spent the money wisely.”

When the two won the money, they were still happily married. The first thing they did was a trip to Dubai – to the advantage! They also invested £150,000 in a salon working from there. The couple also spent money on thirty used cars and at least fifteen designer handbags.

Money gone and marriage over

Griffiths has quit her job as a teacher. She was afraid that teachers and students would see her differently now. As a result, she now worked full time at her salon. But she was bored because teaching was her passion.

Lara claims that her partner has also put “a lot of money” into his fairly successful music career. It is said that he spent thousands of francs to produce a record. In 2013 the money ran out and the marriage ended.

Griffiths now lives with her mother in a four-bedroom house with her two daughters, Kitty, 16, and Ruby, 19. “I’ve spent the last 10 years making sure my kids have a good life no matter what,” she says, as she notes in the Daily Mail, “The lottery didn’t screw me up.” (jl)
