Electric BMW, summer home on the Danish coast and an annual salary of no less than eight million euros (equivalent to 7.6 million Swiss francs)! As CEO of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk – the largest insulin producer in the world – Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen has taken good care of himself.
But for some time now everyone has been talking about the company because of another product: slimming injections. Thus, anyone who initiates the drug Wegovy should tumble the pounds.
The new treatment has not only generated a real weight loss hype, but has also made the company even more profitable than before. Since the launch of the weight loss injection, Novo Nordisk has replaced luxury goods manufacturer LVMH as the most valuable company in Europe – with a market value of more than 400 billion francs. But who is behind the company that revolutionized weight loss? “The Times” met with the pharmaceutical CEO for an interview.
The Dane grew up with little luxury. His parents had a farm where they kept cattle and pigs. Jorgensen and his three sisters helped on weekends and during school holidays.
The current head of the group still seems to place a high value on proximity to land. That is why he lives with his wife just outside Copenhagen, in the immediate vicinity of the lake. He also has a summer house on the coast of Denmark, where he regularly spends his holidays with his wife and two adult children.
The current CEO has been with Novo Nordisk since 1991, right after completing his studies in finance and business administration. At the start of his employment, he also got to know his wife Lotte: “It was a great package. I got the job and got to know my wife at the same time,” the pharmaceutical boss told the British Times.
Prior to his role as CEO, Jorgensen worked as an economist in the fields of healthcare, economics and planning. In addition, he fulfilled numerous stays abroad, including in the Netherlands, the United States and Japan. In 2004, he was appointed Vice President for IT and Business Development.
Even if his company makes headlines with weight-loss drugs, the CEO himself has nothing to fear when it comes to weight issues. Jorgensen not only sports regularly, but also attaches great importance to a healthy diet.
“Most days I do at least a little bit of sport, it energizes me and clears my head,” Novo Nordisk’s boss told the newspaper.
The Dane wants to help overweight people with his slimming injection. “The most important thing is that there is finally hope for obese people.” (dzc)
