The fire at Evin prison in the Iranian capital Tehran has damaged one of the largest buildings in the complex. The AP news agency looked at satellite photos and analyzed the damage.
Iranian authorities are also reporting that at least eight people were killed in the major fire that broke out on Saturday. It is not clear if this is the actual death toll. There is no independent or verifiable information on the number of victims. Four people were killed and 61 injured yesterday.
Photos from the Iranian news agency Mizan show the damage inside:
What exactly happened in prison on Saturday is not yet clear. Evin Prison is notorious. There are many political prisoners, including opponents of the Iranian regime, arrested during the demonstrations in recent weeks.
Iranian state media say there is no connection between the fire and the protests, but it is unclear what they are basing it on. The fire broke out after a fight between prisoners in a sewing workshop in the complex, the governor of Tehran said on state television.
The BBC reported on a video posted by an anti-government group calling for “death to the dictator” outside the prison. Another video showed objects being thrown at the prison from outside the walls.
Explosions and smoke at Evin prison in the Iranian capital last Saturday:
Tens of thousands of people in Iran have been protesting the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini for weeks. She was arrested by the police for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly. According to eyewitnesses, she was ill-treated by the police after her arrest.
Iranians, including many young people, gather daily to demonstrate. They are demanding the resignation of the government. The police are taking action against the protests. Hundreds of people have died, according to human rights groups.
The Iranians are demonstrating against the regime and want more freedom. The situation is unique. NOSop3 explained why:
