Russia will not negotiate peace until Ukraine demands it on its knees

The Vice President of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev asserted that Moscow there is no need for peace negotiations with Ukraine until he asks for it on his knees, commenting on a meeting of about thirty countries held in the Saudi city of Jeddah to seek a solution to the conflict.

“We don’t need any dialogue. Foe he must come crawling on his knees, begging for mercy.”he asserted.

The former president, one of the main hawks in Russia, said on the occasion of the meeting in Jeddah that “it is difficult to criticize the desire to end the war.”

He said that any peace proposal can only be successful if it meets three basic conditions.

“The first: the participation of both sides in the conflict, something that does not happen” because Russia was not invited to the said meeting, he said.

“Second: take into account the historical context. And it is about the following: Ukraine did not exist as a state before 1991. It is a fragment of the Russian Empire,” he said.

He concluded that it is also necessary to “take into account the current reality”, which in his opinion is that “Ukraine is in the stage of semi-disintegration, and part of its territories has been returned to Russia”.

“A mediator who is ready to recognize these obvious aspects has a chance of success. The rest, nothing,” he agreed.

After frustrated peace talks in Istanbul in April 2022, Russia reiterated that it is not opposed to dialogue with Ukraine to end the conflict, but accuses Kiev of not being willing to dialogue.

Ukraine, for its part, demands as a condition for the start of negotiations the withdrawal of Russian troops to the borders in 1991which would include the annexed Crimean peninsula, the release of all prisoners of war and substantial reparations, which Russia considers unacceptable.
