Panama registers 8,662 flag vessels

The Maritime Administration of Panama (AMP) reported that this country remains the leader in ship registrations, adding in the first half of 2023 alone more than 5.9 million gross registered tons.

Towards an international platform IHS Markitat the end of June, the Panamanian fleet was assembled 8,662 ships that add up 249.8 million gross registered tons.

According to the AMP, the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine has established a competitiveness strategy for 2023 based on three quality objectives to measure management during this period.

The subject explained that the first of these is aimed at improving the current retention percentage, compared to that of the last 10 years. By 2023, the Registry reports a retention of 37%, a figure that exceeds the average of the last 10 years. (13.8%).

In addition, transfer cancellations decreased by a 6.5%compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the same way, a goal was set for the acquisition of existing ships that are preferably younger than 15 years old. Currently, 54% of ships under the flag this year have an average age of 5 years.

As for new construction, AMP indicates that a third target was established at the end of June aimed at improving coverage of this segment General Administration of the Merchant Marine reported a 92% improvement over the previous period.

In this sense, during the first half of 152 ships which represents 4,029,826 gross registration tons, thus seeking the sustainability of the ship registration business and the compliance of the Panamanian fleet.

“These positive figures are attributed to improvements in service, investment in technology, training of human resources and a customer incentive scheme,” the statement detailed.

He assures that this Administration continued to provide support and personalized treatment to its clients, together with 53 Merchant Marine Private Consulates and its 22 international technical offices.
