She wants to bring African states closer to Europe’s offer to be an ally at COP28 “and work with you on all the issues on the agenda there,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday at the first African climate summit in Nairobi. . “It is important to ensure that Africa’s voice is heard and that Africa’s main concerns – as a continent particularly affected by climate change – are given due attention.”

The partnership between Africa and Europe brings benefits to both the continents and the world. Above all, the discussion on climate finance is important, public funds are not enough for ecological change, said the Commission President. The question must therefore be how to mobilize private investment for Africa. In addition, it is important to talk about carbon pricing and setting global goals for the energy transition.

The summit, hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and the African Union, will be attended until Wednesday by African heads of state and representatives from the United Nations, governments from other parts of the world, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.

Africa needs “huge investments” for climate protection, von der Leyen said. “And Europe wants to be the partner that can close this investment gap.” Through its Global Gateway initiative, the EU aims to mobilize around €150 billion for investment in Africa between 2021 and 2027. The world climate conference COP28 will take place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai.
