The summit, hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and the African Union, will be attended until Wednesday by African heads of state and representatives from the United Nations, governments from other parts of the world, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.

Africa needs “huge investments” for climate protection, von der Leyen said. “And Europe wants to be the partner that can close this investment gap.” Through its Global Gateway initiative, the EU aims to mobilize around €150 billion for investment in Africa between 2021 and 2027.
