The punks are back on Sylt – they did before Severe storms in Northern Italy – 16 year olds were killed by a tree

Will it escalate again this year in the protest camp on Sylt? The organizers have clear plans for the coming weeks – and must adhere to many conditions.

They are back on the island: On Monday, punks set up a weeks-long protest camp in Tinnum on Sylt. In total, about 30 punks and activists have set up their tents on a site near the Tinnumer Festwiese on the edge of Westerland. Under the motto “Sylt for everyone”, the group criticizes a division in society. Islanders are being driven out by gentrification, the wealthy are shutting down, the website said.

“Housing should be a fundamental right,” says Jonas Hötger, one of the organizers of the German press agency. “And not made impossible by the fact that some people buy a large villa for two or three nice weeks in the summer”.

They have a lot planned for the period up to August 20. “We are planning public discussion rounds, we are also happy to bring people from Sylt, we will paint banners, we would like to organize another protest march against high rents and gentrification all over the island,” says Hötger from the “Sylter Rundschau”.

They also discuss organizing their own Christopher Street Day on Sylt. “Besides tenancy law, sexual diversity and equality is one of the topics that we find very important.”

Not everyone likes the fact that the punks have once again chosen Sylt as the location for their protests. A local reporter reports that some islanders and tourists are still biased this year. The punks assured them that they just wanted to enjoy their time – without causing riots or disturbances.

Last summer, for example, punks who protested against the development of Sylt camped for weeks in a park in front of Westerland’s town hall. Residents and holidaymakers complained about noise and pollution; In the end, the camp had to be evacuated after a corresponding court order.

That is why the district of North Friesland has drawn up clear conditions for this year’s protest camp. The demonstration participants must, among other things, ensure sanitary facilities and proper waste processing on the site. Any instructions from the police, the local assembly authority or the regulatory office of the municipality of Sylt can also reach them. But the punks also have to observe the afternoon rest from 13:00 to 15:00 and the night’s rest from 22:00. The list of disorders contains a total of 16 points.

The camp is approved for up to 300 people. It remains to be seen whether this number will be achieved. Hötger and the leader of the rally, Marvin Bederke, estimate there could be between 50 and 100 people by the weekend. “It can get a bit busy at the weekend, because then there are probably more people who only have a few days off,” Bederke told the “Sylter Rundschau”. Hopefully there are no incidents.
