At least 40 people have been killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan due to extreme weather. At least 31 people have been killed in flash floods in Afghanistan within 72 hours, civil protection officials confirmed to the German news agency on Sunday. In neighboring Pakistan, at least nine people have been killed after heavy rainfall in a border province.
Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province saw heavy rain this weekend with strong winds and thunderstorms, as the newspaper “Dawn” reported. Landslides damaged roads and buildings. More than 100 people have died in the South Asian country since the monsoon rains began in late June.
The flash floods in Afghanistan, which killed at least 31 people, caused severe damage to buildings. In Maidan Wardak province, numerous residents have died in their sleep due to flooding. Dozens of people are still missing, according to civil protection. Hundreds of homes in a total of eight affected counties are said to have been damaged or destroyed.
Severe weather extremes occur again and again in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Both countries are suffering greatly from the effects of climate change. After decades of war and conflict, Afghanistan is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe. For almost two years now, Afghanistan has been ruled by the militant Islamist Taliban. Record flooding in the monsoon season temporarily inundated a third of Pakistan by 2022, killing about 1,700 people. (sda/dpa)
