How many times can you fall? Ask wrestler Jeremy Vollenweider (25). But his story is not just the story of a man repeatedly fooled by fate. But above all, the story of a man who keeps getting up. And comes back stronger than before.
Jeremy was 18 years old when he entered a wrestling match. He wasn’t feeling well. And suddenly collapsed on the mat. An epileptic seizure out of the blue. His heart stopped beating for a minute. He was ventilated and brought back to life.
Four years later, the next hammer followed for the wrestler and wrestler, who is also one of the top national gymnasts in the country. The devastating diagnosis: testicular cancer. surgery, chemotherapy. Because he already had too many offshoots, a second operation was necessary. After the amputation of a testicle, the abdominal wall also had to be opened.
Jeremy returned to the sawdust. At the Swiss Federal Championships in Zug in 2019, he won the first round against Noe van Messel and the second round against Remo Käser. Yet he missed his great goal and did not become a Confederate. Three years later he wanted to catch up in Pratteln.
But in the spring of 2022 the next setback: a cruciate ligament rupture was the almost merciful diagnosis this time. “Of course you swallow when you are faced with such blows of fate and you ask yourself certain questions. But that doesn’t take long for me,” says the man from Schaffhausen.
He came back stronger. In the current season, he has competed in four wrestling festivals, winning the wreath each time. He often swung on Sunday after participating in a national gymnastics competition the day before. He started there five times and won five times. The man, who weighs almost 105 kilograms during the wrestling season, runs the 100 meters in an ideal race in 12.5 seconds.
The next big highlight for him will be the Unspunnen-Schwinget in Interlaken. Before the next highlight is scheduled for September 9 with the Swiss National Gymnastics Day, which takes place every six years. In Wigoltingen, Thurgau, Vollenweider would like to succeed Andy Imhof (38).
The competition will be fierce there, because Sämi Giger (25) also wants to start on the national gymnastics day. Domenic Schneider (29) is also considering participating. Vollenweider is required. And let’s hope that the award ceremony is over soon. Because after the match he showers the sawdust off his body and lies on the mat for the Weinfelden wrestlers that same evening.
“It’s never too much for me. I just enjoy sport and exercise and live every minute of it,” says Vollenweider.
Tried hard by fate. But never lost courage and optimism. 25-year-old Jeremy Vollenweider is Switzerland’s stand-up man.
