Dead after storm on Crete, flights diverted

A man died in severe storms on the Greek island of Crete. Heavy showers caused flooding in the northern part of the island. The man’s car was towed out to sea near the village of Agia Pelagia.

The flooding also caused great inconvenience elsewhere. Firefighters received hundreds of emergency calls about flooded homes and the airport in the capital, Heraklion, was closed for several hours.

Other cars were also swept away by the water. Chaos abounds in the streets of Agia Pelagia:

No planes could depart from Heraklion. Planes for the island were diverted. For example, three Transavia flights to Heraklion went to Athens and Chania, which is located in the western part of Crete. The passengers will be accommodated in hotels.

Pictures show that Heraklion airport was packed with passengers hoping to catch a flight after all. The airport is now open again.

Meteorologists expect the storm to move further east. A severe weather warning has been issued via SMS for the Dodecanese Archipelago. This archipelago also includes islands popular with tourists, such as Rhodes and Kos.
