Fortuna Sittard and RKC Waalwijk were not able to build on their good form of the past few weeks on Saturday. The duel in Sittard ended 0-0.

With captains Mats Seuntjens and Michiel Kramer back in the starting XI, both teams started the game confidently. Under new coach Julio Velazquez, Fortuna had won three games in a row and RKC had seven points from their last three games.

Hardly any chances in the first half

That good form didn’t translate into a good game. It was entertaining nonetheless. RKC took the initiative in Limburg, but Fortuna gradually got better into the game in the first half. In the first half there were hardly any chances. Iliass Bel Hassani and Burak Yilmaz both shot straight at the goalkeeper.

At the beginning of the second half, Michiel Kramer finally found space. The striker also scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

With chances from Thierry Lutonda and late substitute Patrick Vroegh, RKC were the closest to scoring as the game progressed, despite Fortuna playing the better game.

In stoppage time, the game seemed to be turned on its head. When Kramer went down in the penalty area, referee Joey Kooij waved off the invitation to take a penalty, but when Fortuna striker Burak Yilmaz was pulled down by Juriën Gaari moments later, VAR asked Kooij to look at the side shots.

Kooij also stuck to his decision after viewing the pictures and did not award a penalty. It remained 0-0 and Fortuna coach Velazquez’s winning streak came to an end. RKC went unbeaten for the fourth time in a row, Fortuna even for the fifth time in a row.
