Manzanillo: New Shipwreck Dog Owner Sees Himself as a “Second Master”

Genaro Rosales and the dog Bella.

Genaro Rosales reported Thursday (local time) in the western Mexican port city of Manzanillo that he was part of the crew of the tuna trawler that tracked down Shaddock and his dog Bella. “I was one of the first to have contact with her.”

Tuna trawler crew member was one of Bella’s rescuers

Shaddock and Bella landed in Manzanillo on Tuesday. The two left the Mexican coastal city of La Paz in April for a 6,000-kilometer journey to French Polynesia. But after a short time their catamaran “Aloha Toa” got damaged in a storm.

For weeks, the disabled boat and its two occupants drifted across the Pacific – until the tuna trawler crew rescued the two more than 1,500 miles from either coast. Shaddock now wants to return to Australia, but doesn’t want to subject his mongrel dog to the stress of travel. So he gave it to Rosales.

“Timothy saw how I treated Bella,” said the 48-year-old. “I told him I like animals. I already have a dog and cats and budgerigars.” (AFP)
