Battery trains in Austria, hydrogen trains in Italy: Stadler Rail receives two major orders in a very short time

Stadler won the contract for the delivery of battery-powered trains by the Austrian Federal Railways.

Thurgau company Stadler Rail managed to get two large orders in a very short time. This includes, on the one hand, the delivery of battery trains to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and, on the other hand, the delivery and maintenance of hydrogen trains to Italy. Secondly, it is the first order of this kind in all of Europe.

According to the press release from Stadler Rail and ÖBB on Friday, there are 120 battery trains. A relevant framework agreement needs to be signed and the first order for 16 trains to be placed in autumn 2023.

Trains will replace diesel fleet

According to Stadler, Flirt Akku trains will replace the diesel fleet and will be used on partially electrified or non-electric routes, particularly in Eastern Austria. The train type is said to be a battery-powered variant of Stadler’s bestseller Flirt.

The traction batteries installed on these trains are charged under the overhead line while the train is in motion. As a result, they enable “sustainable rail operations on non-electrified sections of roads”.

According to the ÖBB announcement, the duration of the framework agreement is ten years and its total volume could reach up to 1.3 billion euros.

First order for hydrogen trains in Europe

On Thursday, Stadler Rail announced that it has been commissioned to deliver and maintain a total of 25 hydrogen trains to Italy. Ten trains will go to the Italian rail operator Azienda Regional Sarda Trasporti (ARST) in Sardinia and another 15 to Calabrian Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC).

Following the public tender held in June, a framework contract was signed for the design, manufacture, delivery and maintenance of the trains. Stadler did not provide any financial details about the deal in the press release, but both projects are said to be funded with EU funds from the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience.

According to the information obtained, the vehicles will be equipped with a fuel cell and hydrogen propulsion and will be intended for regional and suburban traffic on the narrow-gauge network (950 mm) in the two regions of Italy. In a first step, ARST and FdC each removed six vehicles from their framework contracts.

According to Stadler, it is the first train manufacturer in the world to develop, build and deliver hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge multiple units. It is the first order for hydrogen trains in Europe. (SDA)
