The daily business of the British low-cost airline Easyjet is profitable again for the first time in a quarter after a long dry period. In the third financial quarter to the end of June, profit before tax adjusted for special effects was GBP 203 million (CHF 225 million).
The group thus clearly beat industry insiders’ expectations after reporting a loss of £114 million a year earlier. Easyjet justified the development with continued high demand for tickets with higher flight prices.
The group management also expects a high profit before tax in the last quarter, rival of Europe’s largest low-cost airline Ryanair announced on Thursday in Luton near London. However, the aviation industry faces increasing challenges this summer, management warned.
It referred, among other things, to increased airspace restrictions that could lead to operational delays. In addition, according to information, workers in the industry are striking much more often than before the corona pandemic. At the beginning of the month, Easyjet had already canceled 1,700 flights for this summer.
In the last quarter, group sales rose by more than a third to £2.36 billion compared to the same period last year. With just under 23.5 million, almost 7 percent more passengers boarded. The utilization rate of the machines improved from 88 to 90 percent. (saw/sda/awp/dpa)
