According to media reports, the house of Belgian MEP Maria Arena (56) has been searched in connection with the corruption scandal in the EU Parliament. “I am convinced that the investigation will show that I am in no way involved in this case,” Arena said through her lawyer on Wednesday, according to the Belgian news agency Belga.
The bribery scandal that came to light at the end of last year concerns alleged influence by the governments of Qatar and Morocco on decisions by the EU parliament. The suspects include former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Kaili (44), her partner Francesco Giorgi (35), Belgian MP Marc Tarabella (60) and suspected mastermind Antonio Panzeri (68).
Against Arena has not yet been determined. However, she resigned as Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights after it was revealed that she only revealed a business trip paid for by Qatar long after the corruption scandal broke. (SDA)
