Nearly 29 years after the mysterious murder of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, the case appears to be moving: As the AP news agency initially reported Wednesday evening, authorities in the US state of Nevada have issued a search warrant in the case for a home in the city of Henderson, a direct neighboring city of the gambling metropolis.
According to their own statements, detectives searched the house on Monday (local time) – whether they found any evidence that could lead them to Tupac Shakur’s killer remained open. The police do not want to comment further on the process for the time being in order not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation, a spokesman for the AP said on Tuesday. The exact address of the searched house was also not given.
Shakur (“All Eyez on Me”) was one of the most successful rap artists of the 1990s. In 1996, under unclear circumstances, the 25-year-old was found only meters from the legendary Las Vegas Strip, a popular entertainment street lined with casinos, nightclubs and bars, shot dead in the street. The broadcaster CNN reported afterwards that the detectives assume that the fatal shots should have been aimed at the rap superstar – and that Tupac should not have been an accidental victim.
The 1990s saw clashes between rival rappers on the east and west coasts of the US, which were also incorporated into numerous songs. The unsolved murder of the American rapper is one of the greatest mysteries in the rap scene. Rumors about the alleged perpetrators are still circulating. In addition, conspiracy theories are circulating, according to which the popular rapper has not died at all – but has gone into hiding. This was repeatedly denied by the detectives and emergency services involved.
The Tupac Shakur case is not the only cold case (unsolved criminal case) of the American rap scene that is under further investigation and is currently causing a stir in the United States. At the end of May, a third suspect in the case was charged more than 20 years after the death of hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay of the group Run-DMC. Jam Master Jay was murdered in October 2002 at his studio in Queens, New York over a drug deal.
