According to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the world football association cannot guarantee that the World Cup bonuses will be passed on to the players. The division of the funds made available by FIFA for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August 20) is therefore the responsibility of the national associations, the Swiss confirmed on Wednesday at the opening press conference in Auckland.

“We made recommendations, but we are an association of associations,” said Infantino when asked how Fifa wanted to ensure the payment of the bonuses to the players: “So whatever payments we make, they are processed through the associations, and the associations will then make the appropriate payments to their own players.”

Record prize money for Women’s World Cup

In June, the world federation announced that each World Cup participant should receive a minimum of $ 30,000. In total, FIFA is paying out a record prize money of $110 million. The players’ union FIFPro had recently demanded guarantees that 30 percent of the bonuses would end up with the participants.

The world federation is “in contact with all associations,” said Infantino. But there are “different situations in different parts of the world – taxes, residence and so on – that require special agreements that apply to some associations with the players of the past”.

The men still earn more money

In some countries, the issue of bonuses is the subject of much discussion between the teams and their federations. The Australian team had recently criticized FIFA that the prize money for men ($440 million in Qatar) was even higher.

“I think we made some groundbreaking decisions and that’s not the end of the story,” said Infantino, who also confirmed the World Cup would bring in $500 million and break even.
