“Dr. Roxy” rhythmically jumps up and down in the operating room. Her knees circle, she raises her hands. Can a doctor present himself like this?

What resulted in some mocking reactions to Tiktok now has serious consequences for doctor Katharine Grawe (44). The plastic surgeon from the US has definitively lost her license, various American media report. The Ohio Medical Association found it had harmed patients by live streaming cosmetic procedures. Grawe is now no longer allowed to practice in the US state.

The Tiktokerin was also sentenced to a fine of 4,500 dollars (about 3,900 francs). You have “failed to meet treatment standards”. Her approval was first withdrawn in November and the decision has been final since Friday.

At the time, the medical association had stated that its further activity would carry “the risk of immediate and serious harm to the public”. The agency said it neglected its patients as it live-streamed parts of its procedures, spoke into a camera and answered questions from viewers as the surgeries took place.

patients harmed

One such video shared on TikTok shows her performing liposuction on a patient while speaking into a camera. In another video, Dr. Grawe dances in gowns in an operating room. According to the medical association, three patients suffered serious complications after such livestream surgeries and required medical attention.

A patient underwent a Brazilian buttock lift, tummy tuck and liposuction in 2020, some of which were live-streamed on Tiktok. It was later determined that the patient had suffered a perforated small intestine and an infection. Another patient who underwent buttock surgery and liposuction had severe abdominal pain the next day and required abdominal surgery. A third patient contracted an infection after a breast augmentation and had to have the implants removed.

Grawe addressed the committee ahead of the decision, saying she took to social media to explain cosmetic surgery to viewers. She said, “But standing here today, I can see how many of these videos looked stupid and unprofessional.” Grawe said she was forced to lay off 20 employees at her clinic near Columbus, Ohio.

Doctor can appeal

The agency said it wrote to Grawe in 2018, citing concerns about patient privacy and potential professional ethics violations. Jonathan B. Feibel, vice president of the chamber, recommended that her license be revoked for “life-altering, reckless treatment.”

He said, “These findings were not normal complications associated with routine medicine, but rather were caused by recklessness and disregard for the rules of Ohio medical practice.” Grawe’s use of social media exacerbated their reckless behavior, he added.

“Dr. Roxy” has 15 days to appeal against the decision of the medical association. She has now made her social media accounts private.
