In April, Hollywood star Robert De Niro surprised with private news: he has become a father again. He and partner Tiffany Chen have had a daughter, Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro. Details about the descendants have not yet been released. But now the mother is addressing the audience – and talking about difficulties.
Speaking to the television program “CBS Mornings,” she recalls the symptoms that appeared after she returned home after giving birth: At first it was a tingling of the tongue. “Then I realized that my face feels strange. I couldn’t contain the feeling. It felt strange,” Chen said.
After a few days, her symptoms continued to worsen. Chen describes in an interview with the reporter that her face “fused” with itself: “It just collapsed.” A week after these paralysis symptoms appeared, she could no longer eat.
“I tried to eat. I just wanted to put a fork in my mouth and it all came out,” Chen continues, “I couldn’t eat and then I started slurping.” She then turned to a doctor, who immediately sent her to a hospital. “I lost all facial functions as soon as I got to the clinic,” reports Chen, who is still visibly shaken.
The symptoms are commonly known as Bell’s palsy, the medical term is idiopathic facial palsy. It occurs when the facial nerve becomes damaged or irritated. The exact cause is often unknown, but inflammation is thought to play a role. This can be caused, for example, by the herpes virus, cold viruses or bacterial infections. It is also suspected that factors such as stress, hypothermia, hormonal changes or autoimmune diseases may contribute. In most cases, Bell’s palsy will resolve on its own within weeks to months.
Gia Virginia is Chen and De Niro’s first child together. It is seventh overall for the 79-year-old. His first two children are Drena and Raphael, who are now 51 and 46 years old.
