This is how the international media reacted to the NATO summit: “Zelensky is left alone with his NATO dream”

Postpone: US President Joe Biden promises Volodymyr Zelenskiy more protection, but no NATO membership yet.

The Guardian (UK): “Volodimir Zelensky failed in his latest attempt to invite Ukraine to join NATO after the heads of state and government of the 31 countries signed a statement that contained neither a set timetable nor clear conditions for eventual membership.”

Los Angeles Times (US): “But even after the end of the war with Russia, ideally with a Ukrainian victory, it could make sense for Western states to give Ukraine security guarantees that are not linked to NATO membership.”

Courier (Austria): “Zelensky was left alone with his NATO dream – out of consideration for Berlin and Paris and for fear of the Republicans and the US elections, the US president is slamming the brakes.”

The mirror (D): “Is that enough? Hardly in the long run – but for now it’s enough to prevent NATO and Ukraine falling further apart. Moscow shouldn’t be happy.”

CNN (US): “All in all, the summit, held near the Russian border in a country once conquered, co-opted and controlled by the Kremlin, is a show of strength for friends of Ukraine and bad news for the Russian ruler.”

Al Jazeera (QAT): “Regardless of how Putin’s war ends or when it ends, Russia has already lost moral and strategic supremacy to an increasingly offensive alliance that is sure to militarize the continent and expand its reach around the world.”

The New York Times (US): “Left parties in Europe, historically critical of militarism and American power, have overwhelmingly defended the West. The evolution of the German Greens from staunch opponents of nuclear weapons to a party apparently prepared to risk nuclear war is a particularly vivid example of this.”

The Kiev Independent (UKR): “The Vilnius summit comes 15 years after NATO’s biggest mistake in modern history. In 2008, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy blocked Ukraine and Georgia from joining the alliance. After the Bucharest summit fell Russia, assured that its neighbors would remain undefended, invaded Georgia and soon after invaded Ukraine… NATO must not make the same mistake twice.” (gf)
