The Toronto Zoo is asking visitors to stop showing videos and photos to the gorillas. The zoo states that some of the content may be disturbing. Visitors should see the gorillas engaged in natural activities, not staring at cell phones as they do.
The zookeepers themselves use screens as part of the animal enrichment program. There, however, the gorillas watch videos of other animals and nature documentaries. There, the animal experts have control over the content the gorillas are exposed to.
A zoo in Chicago has also taken measures to prevent interactions between visitors and the animals. This after a young gorilla was distracted by mobile phones. To keep visitors further away from the glass fence, a rope barrier was placed.
