Instead of the existing 30 single rooms, five apartments and a commercial area will be created on the ground floor: Zurich City Council is renovating the last of the three old “Gammelhäuser” for 2.4 million francs.
Three and a half bedroom apartments should cost around CHF 2,640 per month, according to a statement from the city council on Wednesday. It gives the net rent of commercial buildings as CHF 2,320.
The house on Magnusstrasse is currently in use. According to the announcement, the renovation of the residential building, which was built in 1894, will begin in February 2024. The work is expected to be completed in May 2025.
The city bought the house next to the bakery along with two other ramshackle houses in 2017. Previously, a private owner was said to be renting out single rooms to refugees and marginalized people at high prices.
After a deliberate fire, it was initially empty since 2016. It was in a desolate state. With the planned repair, the city council writes that “the residential and commercial building can be reused for 30 to 40 years.” (SDA)
