1/5
In December 2020, German chef Thomas Atak was shot dead.

The scenes are reminiscent of a gangster movie: on a wet December evening in 2020, cook Thomas Atak († 34) was shot in the head in front of his apartment in Ahlen (D) when he just got out of his car. The killer had been waiting there for Atak to come home from a service at a friend’s restaurant. The search for the perpetrator yielded no results for years, the program “Aktenzeichen XY” reported about the murder.

The families and the prosecutor’s office offered a reward of 55,000 euros for relevant information – but there were no traces. Until now. About two and a half years after the murder, a former Swiss restaurateur is at the center of the investigation: Daniel G.* (44).

According to “Bild”, G. owned an ice cream parlor and a restaurant in Dortmund. “The 44-year-old allegedly tried to persuade two people we know by name to kill the 34-year-old in Ahlen and Hamm at the end of 2020,” says Julika Böhlendorf (50), head of the homicide department. team. “The two have declined the request and are not suspected of committing the crime.” But shortly after the conversation, Atak is dead.

The suspected killer was a Swiss innkeeper

G. apparently wanted to get rid of Atak. It is unclear whether he paid a hit man or took the gun himself.

According to “Bote der Urschweiz”, the alleged killer was a Swiss with Turkish roots. He grew up in Central Switzerland and managed several gastronomic companies in Brunnen SZ. He was also known as a football player in the region before leaving Switzerland.

Later G. had a shop for buying gold. This is where Atak and G.’s paths may have crossed. The victim was deeply in debt when he wanted to open a shop to buy gold.

The victim’s family finally wants clarification

Will the mystery of Atak’s murder finally be solved? The arrest of the Swiss innkeeper is a glimmer of hope for the family. “Something is finally happening. We hope and pray every day that Thomas’ killer is finally brought to justice,” a relative of the victim tells “Bild”.

G. has been detained since Tuesday. Inspectors searched his and two other apartments, a jewelry store and two restaurants that belonged to G. It is the presumption of innocence. (jwg)
