At least 50 people have been killed in Pakistan since the monsoon rains began in late June. The national disaster agency in the country of the German news agency confirmed this on Friday.
According to the authority, most of the deaths occur in the province of Punjab, the country’s most populous province. In the provincial capital Lahore, the heaviest rainfall in decades fell in the past two days.
Most of the deaths were due to houses collapsing under the bodies of water. The rain also triggered landslides in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing eight children, the agency said.
In Pakistan, the annual monsoon repeatedly leads to deaths. Last summer, the South Asian country experienced a record flood, which killed more than 1,700 people and temporarily submerged a third of the country, according to official figures. (rbu/sda/dpa)
