Saxon Culture Minister Barbara Klepsch and the 61-year-old musician signed the contract on Wednesday. The term of office starts on August 1, 2024 and lasts six years.

Gatti succeeds Christian Thielemann, whose contract has not been renewed and will lead the orchestra until the summer of 2024. The Staatskapelle in the East German cultural metropolis chose Gatti a year ago.

“Our new Chief Conductor is one of the best in the world and stands for maintaining the musical excellence of the Saxon State Chapel and inspiring and moving people in the opera house in the capital and worldwide as a cultural ambassador for Saxony,” says Klepsch .

The character of the orchestra is in good hands with Gatti. At the same time, he will initiate new accents and programmatic developments. The appointed Semperoper director Nora Schmid was also convinced that Gatti would set the tone in Dresden and on international stages.

Gatti remembered the early days of his work with the Dresdeners. In February 2000 he had the honor of conducting a Staatskapelle concert for the first time. “It was a musical understanding I have rarely experienced and the starting gun for an artistic relationship that has intensified over the years, both in Dresden and in guest appearances around the world. Today I feel happy and deeply honored to take on this new task in one of the great music cities of Europe and lead one of the oldest and most important orchestras in the world.”
