After the resignation of a popular precinct chief, thousands have once again protested against the government in the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv. The rally was organized spontaneously on Wednesday evening after Ami Eshed announced his resignation. At the edge of the protest, a car rammed a protester, injuring him slightly. It was initially unclear whether it was an attack or an accident.
Police Minister Ben-Gvir had demanded that Eshed take firm action against participants in the mass anti-government protests and judicial reforms that had been underway for months. The Tel Aviv police chief refused, saying he did not want to use “unreasonable force”. Ben-Gvir and Israeli police chief Kobi Shabtai then wanted to transfer him to another department. Ashed refused.
Protesters blocked roads in several cities and a highway in Tel Aviv. Police deployed water cannons.
The government resumes a pause in the restructuring of the judicial system, which aims to weaken the country’s highest court. Since then there have been demonstrations against the government again. The government accuses the judges of excessive interference in political decisions. Critics see the separation of powers and the democratic order in danger. For months, there have been regular mass protests against the project in the country.
A Palestinian attacker injured at least seven people in an attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Hamas spoke of a “first response” to a large-scale military operation in Jenin, which the army ended Wednesday evening. (sda/dpa)
