Hurricane Poly has been raging over northern Germany since Wednesday afternoon. The storm has already claimed the first fatality. People are not allowed to go out into the street, objects can fly around. “The focus of the wind development is clear for the North Sea and the adjacent inland region from East Frisia to the northern half of Schleswig-Holstein,” the German weather service said. Danger reigns until midnight.
In Rhede (Ems) in Lower Saxony, a woman († 64) died when she was walking her dog from a tree, writes “Bild”. A number of other trees have fallen on train tracks and are restricting train traffic.
The hurricane is raging over the coasts of Germany at 120 kilometers per hour. The German weather service warns against driving and recommends staying indoors. Objects can fly around. Water sports enthusiasts are also warned: according to the police, this is currently life-threatening.
Due to the strong gusts of wind, the plane landed at an angle at Hanover Airport. The pilot prevented worse and landed the machine. Ferries to the North Sea islands can also be cancelled.
In Bremerhaven, fallen trees and falling branches caused several extinguishing efforts in the afternoon. The authorities also reported an increasing number of storm damage in the Oldenburger Land in Lower Saxony. At Deutsche Bahn, there were restrictions on local and long-distance traffic due to the storm.
ICE trains from Frankfurt am Main via Cologne to Amsterdam did not run on the entire route. In addition, IC trains on the route from Berlin to Amsterdam only ran to Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony. In local traffic, several regional train connections were lost in the northwest.
The heaviest summer storm since the weather forecasts began has caused great damage in the Netherlands. Wind gusts of up to 146 kilometers per hour were measured on the North Sea coast on Wednesday and the KNMI weather service issued the highest ‘red’ storm warning for four northern provinces. Hundreds of flights were canceled at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and train traffic in the north also came to a standstill.
At Schiphol, only “very limited air traffic” was possible until noon because storm “Poly” caused rain and poor visibility in addition to strong winds. According to NOS, more than 300 flights have been canceled at the important hub. An overturned truck blocked a highway near the city of Alkmaar and fallen trees blocked many other roads.
In the province of North Holland, which also includes Amsterdam, people received reports via the mobile network. They were asked not to go outside if possible and to call the overloaded emergency services only in “life-threatening” situations.
The second highest wind force eleven was measured in the port of IJmuiden. This makes “Poly” the “first very heavy summer storm” in the Netherlands since the measurements began, according to weather service Weerplaza. A hurricane surge of 146 kilometers per hour in IJmuiden was also the strongest storm surge ever measured in the Netherlands in the summer. Severe storms in the Netherlands mainly occur from October to April. (jwg/AFP)
