In the future, many genetically modified food and feed products should be able to be sold in the EU without special labelling. The European Commission proposed in Brussels on Wednesday to relax the current rules on genetic manipulation as part of a draft law.
This should apply if the new plants could also have been created through conventional breeding methods. These plants are therefore equated with conventional plants. However, the same safety requirements continue to apply to them as to varieties that have been created, for example, by crossing.
Leading scientific organizations are pushing for deregulation. Environmental groups, however, warn of the consequences.
Due to the moratorium on genetic engineering, genetically modified plants cannot currently be grown in Switzerland except for experimental purposes. Swiss consumer protection and the umbrella organization Biosuisse, among others, criticized the plans of the EU Commission on Wednesday, in particular with regard to abolishing the declaration of genetically modified products.
