For food: European Commission wants to relax rules for genetic engineering

class=”sc-29f61514-0 jbwksb”>

The EU Commission wants to relax the rules for genetic manipulation, including the obligation to declare for many plants. There is criticism, among others, from Swiss consumer protection. (archive image)

This should apply if the new plants could also have been created through conventional breeding methods. These plants are therefore equated with conventional plants. However, the same safety requirements continue to apply to them as to varieties that have been created, for example, by crossing.

Leading scientific organizations are pushing for deregulation. Environmental groups, however, warn of the consequences.

Due to the moratorium on genetic engineering, genetically modified plants cannot currently be grown in Switzerland except for experimental purposes. Swiss consumer protection and the umbrella organization Biosuisse, among others, criticized the plans of the EU Commission on Wednesday, in particular with regard to abolishing the declaration of genetically modified products.
