Gold bars, foreign passports and several billion rubles in cash – a lot was confiscated during the raid on the business and private premises of Yevgeny Prigozhin (62). Last week, 10 billion rubles came to light in two vehicles – this is equivalent to about 99 million francs. Since the armed uprising in Russia on June 24, hardly anything has been heard from the head of the Wagner Group. Prigozhin has become a traitor to Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) and the Kremlin – yet his campaign had surprisingly little repercussions.
As the Russian newspaper “Fontanka” writes, the authorities wanted to keep the money for investigative purposes. Finally, there is the question of how the Wagner boss was able to finance and carry out such an action. However, the money has now been returned to Prigozhin – the order would have come from the top.
A search of Prigozhin’s rooms found a total of 80 boxes full of valuables and cash, which have now been returned. On Sunday, a driver with power of attorney collected the 10 billion rubles, several hundred thousand dollars and five gold bars in St. Petersburg and took everything to Moscow, where Prigozhin would have been at the time. Where he is now is unknown. According to the Belarusian media, he was in Minsk last week.
Prigozhin getting his money back shows how much power he still has. Although his companies have been liquidated and all cooperation between the Kremlin and the oligarch has ended, the fact that he can still enter Russia shows that he still enjoys privileges. (jwg)
