The Chinese government has decided to strengthen the export control of gallium and germanium from next August, two key metals in semiconductor manufacturing and other basic components for the energy transition. The move comes after the United States and other major chipmakers such as Japan and the Netherlands decided to impose restrictions on technology exports.

And it does “in order to protect the interests and national security, with the approval of the State Council, it has been decided to implement export controls for elements related to gallium and germanium,” the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs of China claimed.

The European Commission, “concerned” by the announcement of the Chinese authorities, has already warned that it will analyze whether the measures are in line with rules of international trade and its potential impact on global supply chains.
