Justice archives the Generalitat’s complaint against Pablo Casado

Referee initiated an open case against former PP leader Pablo Casado because he said that in a Catalan school, Spanish-speaking students are not allowed to go to the toilet. The judge considers that those words were “wrong and rejectable”, but considers that they are protected by freedom of expression and that they were uttered in the context of “political disputes”. The judge decided to open an investigation based on the report filed by the Generalitat for libel, defamation and incitement to hatred.

In 2021, at a party event in Galicia, Casado said that in Catalonia there are teachers “with instructions not to let Spanish-speaking children into the restroom». “Can it be tolerated that a five-year-old child is asked to throw stones in order to isolate another?”, “Can it be tolerated that there are children who, because they speak Spanish in the yard, put stones in their backpacks?” Can it be tolerated to point to the children of the Civil Guard and the National Police and tell them that they cannot integrate?” he asked.

In the testimony before the judge on March 20, Casado assured that he did not dispute these claims and that it was based on press articles with the aim of denouncing the language policy of the Generalitat. The news on which the former leader of the PP was allegedly based was from 2008 and another decontextualized one from 1997 about the Basque Country.
