Santiago closed the European Under-20 Olympic Wrestling Championship

The European Under-20 Olympic Wrestling Championship was successfully closed in Santiago. More than 2,000 participants and a significant economic impact on the city. Spain won four fifth places.

According to Pablo Pintos, the tournament director, it was “an event worth more than 600,000 euros, of which 90% stayed in the city, through the companies that organized the championship, hotels, services, transportation, etc.” Previously, promotional activities were carried out in educational centers, by distributing tickets to different centers. For the first time in history, after the great powers of the East, Spain managed to enter the top 10 European Olympic wrestlers, both male and female. The director of the tournament highlighted the “congratulations received from countries with a long tradition in the fight for a high organizational level of the championship”.

Stake

There were 40 different countries, 34 countries in competition and another six between judges and technical staff. There were a total of 800 accredited athletes, including coaches and athletes, at this historic competition for Galicia, in the category up to 20 years old, the age before the absolute category.

The event was held for the first time in the capital of Galicia from June 26 to July 2. The event was considered a historic event for Santiago, as it is the first time that a European event has been held in the city and the second time in Spain, after Pontevedra in 2019. Next year, Pontevedra will host the world championship.

Entry to all competitions was free, and all events could be followed live on the International Federation’s website with more than 35,000 visits per day, with a total of 210,000 per week, with great appeal in Europe as well as in the United States and Asia, as he considers this European tournament the most important because of the level of the participating countries.
