Many questions about Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (62) and his mercenary group are still open. Is he safe in Belarus? What are his goals? What happens to his loyal mercenaries? Since the armed uprising in Russia on June 24, which ended on the same day, there has been only one voice report explaining that it was not an attempted coup against President Vladimir Putin (70).
He would now be in Belarus. He was banished. Now the Wagner boss is back. “We need your support now more than ever,” Prigozhin said in a voice message distributed through the Gray Zone telegram channel on Monday. The Telegram channel writes that this is a “statement” in response to popular speculation.
According to Prigozhin, the “March of Justice” was partially “successful”. His goal was to “fight traitors and mobilize society,” he says. According to Prigoschin, the Wagner group has done a lot about this.
The post raises more questions than it answers. It remains unclear which traitors Prigozhin believes he has been fighting against. It is no secret that he has a problem with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu (68) and his entourage. Again and again he criticized the course of “Special Operation Z”. But Putin stays with Shoigu – he is still in office.
Prigozhin continues: “I am sure that in the near future you will see our next victories at the front.” But what front is he talking about? The Wagner group has withdrawn from the Ukraine. The recruitment of further mercenaries was suspended for a while on Monday.
Russian opposition politician Igor Yakovenko is sure that Prigozhin could plan a new campaign against Moscow. He told the Ukrainian news site “Obozrevatel” that the Wagner boss is likely planning to bring some of his followers to Belarus. “I think both Prigozhin and Putin will try to play against each other in the future,” he says. Yakovenko emphasizes that an attack from Belarus would be easier than from Ukraine.
“One look at the map is enough to see that the march to Moscow from this side no longer encounters the water barrier that prevented a successful march last time.” Presumably he means the river Dnieper.
Putin’s ex-commander Igor Girkin predicted something similar. “A new mutiny is not long in coming,” he said on Telegram on Saturday. And further: “Because there’s no point in risking your life to defend such a pathetic government.” He did not specify whether Prigozhin would launch another attack, or someone else.
While Prigozhin went into hiding, the inscriptions in Wagner’s training center were already being removed. His companies were liquidated. Meanwhile, it remains a mystery what happens to the Wagner troops stationed abroad.
