The institution will collect evidence on war crimes in the country and serve to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.

The European Union (EU) continues to take steps to try Russia for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. This Monday, the Center for Prosecution of Crimes of Aggression against Ukraine, an organization that will promote the investigation by collecting evidence and documentation for easier prosecution of war crimes, began its work in The Hague. The European Commission believes that this institution “will be crucial” for ensuring Moscow’s responsibility.

Brussels contributed to the operation of this center, which has national prosecutors who have already participated in the joint investigation team on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Experts will work hand in hand, sharing evidence and providing legal, financial and logistical support in the investigation of war crimes cases. The center will also be instrumental in preparing future trials of the conflict in a court established for that purpose or the International Criminal Court.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to inflict unspeakable horrors every day. I am extremely concerned by the news of deliberate attacks on civilians, including children (…). We are collecting evidence of countless international crimes committed by Russia and this center will play a key role in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Difficulties at the front

Meanwhile, Kiev acknowledged the difficult situation on the front on Monday, although it announced the recovery of another 37 square kilometers in the east and south of the country, while Russia assured that Ukrainian troops were losing strength and that the Wagner Group’s mercenary rebellion had not affected the Russian military’s work on the field.

“Last week was difficult on the front. But we are making progress. Let’s move forward, one step at a time!” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar specified that in the east of the country, Kiev troops improved their tactical position and straightened the front line after recovering 9 square kilometers last week. in this direction.

On the southern front, i.e. in Zaporozhye, the Ukrainian armed forces succeeded in the offensive against the occupied cities of Melitopol and Berdyansk — towards which they intend to cut the Russian land corridor on the shores of the Sea of Azov — and recaptured 28.4 square kilometers, according to Efe.
