French football coach Christophe Galtier and his son John Valovic-Galtier, a player’s agent, are “in police custody with the criminal investigation department” in Nice. They are being investigated for suspected discrimination. The criminal case would have taken place during his time at OGC Nice, Nice prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme told AFP.
The two men have been held in police custody since Friday morning.
In mid-April, a preliminary investigation into allegations of “discrimination based on an alleged race or religion” was launched following allegations against Christophe Galtier. He is suspected of making discriminatory, racist and Islamophobic statements during his year as coach of OGC Nice on the Côte d’Azur (2021-2022).
Apparently, the former director of football at Nice, Julien Fournier, started the case. In an email to the club’s Nice management, he had written:
Galtier vehemently denies these statements. For his part, he had filed a death threat and libel lawsuit against Julien Fournier and two journalists. He and Fournier are mortal enemies.
