After the Greek elections: Mitsotakis sworn in as prime minister Horror accident: airport workers sucked up and killed by the engine

Following the Conservatives’ clear victory in Greece’s parliamentary elections, the previous Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was sworn in for a second term. He now wants to implement further reforms quickly, he said on Monday during a meeting with President Ekatirini Sakellaropoulou, which was broadcast on state television. The filling of the ministerial posts should be published on Monday afternoon.

After counting 99.6 percent of the votes cast on Sunday, Mitsotakis’ People’s Party Nea Dimokratia (ND) has 40.6 percent. This gives the party 158 mandates, or an absolute majority in parliament with 300 seats. The left-wing party Syriza, led by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (2015-2019), was the second strongest party in parliament with 17.8 percent of the vote and 48 MPs. The social democrats (Pasok) received 11.9 percent and 32 seats, the communist party KKE 7.7 percent and 20 seats.

The far-right party Spartiates (Spartans) also managed to jump over the three percent threshold to enter parliament with 4.6 percent (12 seats), and the ultra-conservative Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) with 4.5 percent and 12 seats . The party Niki (Victory), which consists mainly of religious fanatics, has 10 seats, the left-wing party Plefsi Eleftherias (Freedom Race) has 8 seats, according to the Interior Ministry.
