Search for survivors: 13-storey building collapses in Egypt

Bad scenes in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria. A 13-story residential building is said to have collapsed. The news channel Al-Arabiya reports this on Monday.

Photos show firefighters standing in front of a pile of rubble in a residential area on Monday. There was initially no information about possible deaths or injuries. Local media reported that there was a supermarket on the ground floor of the house. On Twitter the Egyptian medium “Daily News Egypt” reports that they are looking for survivors.

Building collapses are more common in Egypt

Alexandria governor Mohammed al-Sharif said the building had a “vertical crack” before it collapsed. The apartments were used as a summer residence. Apparently there was no approval for the construction of the top floor, which is why there was already an order to have it removed.

It is not uncommon for buildings to collapse in Egypt. In the North African country, countless buildings are built every year without a permit. Builders often violate technical safety requirements.
