A tragic accident took place in the US state of Texas on Friday evening: an airport employee was pulled against a running engine at San Antonio International Airport.

At the international airport of the city of San Antonio in the US state of Texas, the shock is still great: Friday evening around ten o’clock a ground crew member was thrown against a turbine of a Delta Airline plane – and died.

It was initially unclear exactly how this catastrophe came about, reports the American television channel KENS.

“We are heartbroken and mourn the loss of a family member”

The machine had just landed from Los Angeles shortly before the fatal accident. “Delta Flight 111 taxied to the gate. At that time one of the engines was still running,” said the US traffic authority.

Then it happened: the strong suction of the running engine pulled the worker into the turbine. The airport is involved in the investigation, but is not providing any further information at first: “We will provide further information as soon as the details are clarified,” said San Antonio Airport.

“Our hearts and full support are with the family”

The safety authority has now contacted Delta Airlines to clarify the background of the tragic accident. The airline said Saturday morning it fully supports the ongoing investigation: “We are heartbroken and mourning the loss of an airline family member in San Antonio.”

The airline continued: “Our hearts and our full support are with family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time.” (lia)
