The desperate search for the submarine Titan came to an end on Thursday evening (Swiss time) after the wreckage of the boat was found on the seabed.

The United States Navy deployed its Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System (FAdoss). This is a ship lift system that can lift loads of up to 27 tons from the seabed. Technically, it would be possible to retrieve the Titan’s wreckage.

At the moment, however, it is unclear which organization would lead the salvage, as there has been no report of such submarine incidents, the BBC writes.

“It’s a harsh environment down there,” said Paul Hankin, a deep-sea expert involved in finding the five bodies. The mechanism of the disaster and the location of the find – almost 4,000 meters below sea level – led to the conclusion that it is very unlikely that the remains of the crew will ever be recovered.

However, the search teams are not categorically ruling this out, Hankin continues. According to John Mauger, commander of the US Coast Guard, it should be clarified which devices can be used to locate the bodies. Whether he was suggesting that the bodies had been destroyed by the implosion or whether he was referring to the salvage area remained unclear.
