Afghanistan has confirmed a new holiday: withdrawal date of the last US soldier accused of violent death in the New York subway

In Afghanistan, the Taliban have declared August 31 a new national holiday – the day after the last US soldier left the country in the summer two years ago. This is according to a statement released on Saturday by the militant Islamist leadership in Kabul. The US withdrew all its soldiers at the end of August 2021, ending the international military operation in the Hindu Kush after nearly 20 years.

At midnight on August 30, 2021, Major General Chris Donahue was the last US soldier to leave Kabul airport. The international departure was chaotic. Two weeks earlier, the Taliban had taken power again. The internationally backed Afghan government collapsed. Since then, the Islamists have drastically curtailed human rights and reintroduced harsh laws that particularly oppress women and girls.
