In Austria, a mother is being investigated for repeatedly locking her 12-year-old son in a dog box for several months, pouring cold water over him and torturing him. By all expectations, the investigations against the 32-year-old, who is in custody, would be completed by the end of the summer and result in a possible charge, said Lower Austria State Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager of the AFP- news desk.
This week it was announced that the Supreme Court had rejected a complaint from the woman against her months of detention. The case caused a public outcry in Austria. The 32-year-old was arrested last November and has been held in Krems west of Vienna ever since.
Authorities sent a social worker to the mother’s home last November, reportedly after the estranged father tipped them off. There the social worker found the hypothermic and unconscious boy and called an ambulance.
According to the court, the woman allegedly beat, tied and gagged her son from the beginning of September to November 2022 and repeatedly locked him in a dog crate for hours. In addition, she allegedly starved the child, poured cold water over it several times, and then opened the apartment’s windows for several hours in sub-zero temperatures. The boy’s body temperature then dropped to 26.8 degrees Celsius.
Due to severe malnutrition, the 12-year-old fell into a coma, according to the court, and was taken to hospital in an acute life-threatening condition, according to the court.
The boy’s physical condition has now improved, Baumschlager said. Psychologically, however, he was still broken. (AFP)
