Former US President Donald Trump addressed his supporters for the first time on Saturday after being charged in the documents affair. During a speech at a convention of his Republican party in the southeastern US state of Georgia, the 76-year-old presidential candidate railed against US President Joe Biden and the Justice Department, calling it a “false charge”.
Trump had previously been charged with 37 counts in the government documents affair. According to the indictment, published Friday, there are 31 counts of illegal storage of classified information for national defense, punishable by up to ten years in prison. The ex-president will appear in federal court in Miami, Florida next Tuesday.
He will face trial because he is running for the White House again, Trump told crowds in the city of Columbus on Saturday. If he did not intend to run again in the 2024 presidential election, “there would be no witch hunt, there would be no charges,” the ex-head of state continued.
Trump was scheduled to speak at another Republican convention in North Carolina on Saturday. He was expected to use these platforms to target the FBI and accuse federal prosecutors of falsely targeting him.
The day before, Trump had already responded to the accusation with posts on his online platform Truth Social. Trump called Jack Smith, the attorney general’s special counsel, “mentally disturbed” and a “Trump hater.” “There was no crime,” the 76-year-old added.
According to Trump, the election interference was orchestrated by Biden and his campaign team. “They are after me because we are now way ahead of Biden in the polls again,” he said.
The US federal police FBI seized about 11,000 documents last August during a raid on Trump’s private residence Mar-a-Lago in the US state of Florida, many of them with classification levels. Trump took the White House documents to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his term in January 2021.
Presidents are required by law to turn over official records to the National Archives after their term of office ends. In addition, there are strict legal rules for handling secret documents, including a law against espionage.
