‘Hand slip’: Many men find violence against women ‘acceptable’

More than a third of men said they attacked themselves because they thought they would instill respect for women.

In Germany, traditional role models among young men sometimes lead to high acceptance of violence in partnerships. This is the result of a nationwide representative study by the organization Plan International Germany, available in the Funke papers (Monday editions).

33 percent of men aged 18 to 35 surveyed said they found it “acceptable” to “swipe their hand” occasionally when arguing with their partner. 34 percent have already violently attacked women to instill respect.

Strong aversion to public display of homosexuality

Karsten Kassner, an expert at the Federal Men’s Forum, said she was “shocked” by the Funke papers. “The problem is that a third of the men surveyed underestimate physical violence against women. This urgently needs to change,” said Kassner accordingly.

In addition, the interviewees expressed a high level of distaste for the public display of homosexuality. 48 percent said they felt “uncomfortable” about it.

According to the Funke papers, the study also shows that the traditional image of “housewife” seems to be anchored in many men’s minds: 52 percent of respondents see their role in making enough money—so women mainly look to women. He could take care of the housework himself. According to the data, every second young man does not want to have intercourse with a woman if he has already had many sexual partners.

Classic role models deeply anchored

And 51 percent said they were weak and vulnerable when they showed their emotions. 63 percent said they sometimes felt sad, lonely, or isolated. “Classic role models still anchor in the minds of society,” said Alexandra Tschacher, spokesperson for Funke newspapers Plan International Germany.

Kassner said that many men are basically willing to work for greater equality and against role stereotypes, but will not put this into concrete action. Changing the framework conditions is also the task of politics. A good example of this is the federal government’s paid leave for fathers after childbirth.

For the survey, 1,000 men and 1,000 women ages 18 to 35 were interviewed using a standardized written online questionnaire between March 9 and 21. (AFP)
