Pope Francis survived the second night in hospital after his abdominal surgery. The Holy See announced this on Friday morning.
The head of the Catholic Church underwent a three-hour operation under general anesthesia at Rome’s Gemelli Clinic on Wednesday. The operation had become necessary because of a so-called laparocele, a scar hernia in the area of the intestine.
On Thursday, a day after the procedure, Matteo Bruni, spokesman for the Holy See, reported that the pope’s general health was good. The 86-year-old’s values are stable and he is receiving liquid nutrition.
Accordingly, Francis also thanked for the many wishes for recovery and prayers. According to the Vatican, he also called a woman whose son, Miguel Angel, he had baptized in late March while staying in hospital in northwest Rome. (aeg/sda/dpa)
