On Wednesday morning, the pope held the weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square. The day before he was already in the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for examination. The operation is now scheduled there.

Appointments canceled due to “fever”.

In 2021, the Argentinian had already undergone surgery under general anesthesia for an intestinal disorder – a so-called diverticulitis. Part of his colon was removed. He was then hospitalized for about ten days. It was then said that he had not tolerated the general anaesthetic.

The 86-year-old head of the Catholic Church was taken to a hospital for three nights in late March and treated for “contagious bronchitis”. At the end of May, the pope also canceled appointments “because of a feverish condition”.

Pastor had resigned for health reasons

The head of the Catholic Church has been struggling with health problems for some time. Due to severe knee pain, he repeatedly uses a wheelchair. His hospitalization at the end of March had sparked widespread concern and fueled speculation about the pope’s possible resignation.
