After the destruction of the Kakhovka dam near the city of Kherson, millions of liters of water flow out uncontrollably. Images on social media show large amounts of water flowing out of the lake.
After all: from Tuesday afternoon the water is slowly draining away and there was no huge monster tidal wave.
Swedish experts from Dämmningsverket AB simulated the “worst case”. However, the simulation does not take current measurements into account, but is based on an estimate. Among other things, the temperature and humidity were estimated. As a result, the dam breach would widen by 200 meters per hour.
The water has already reached the city of Kherson. According to authorities, houses and squares are under water. In the Korabel district, houses and garages were flooded. 300 houses in the villages of Korsunka and Dnipro under Novaya Kakhovka could fall into the flood zone, said Vladimir Leontiev, the mayor of Nova Kakhovka. There the water level rose to ten meters.
The football stadium of the local club and the Palace of Culture were also completely flooded. The Russian news agency Ria Novosti published images of swans swimming in the water near the administrative center of Nowa Kakhovka.
“If necessary, we stand ready to evacuate residents of coastal villages. Buses are ready,” said Andrei Aleksenko, Kherson’s Russian representative. And: “The situation is under control, human lives are not threatened. The authorities are checking the water level of the river.”
The water level also rose in the town of Nowa Kachowka, where the destroyed hydroelectric power station is located. Houses on the coast were flooded. Videos of beavers roaming the city circulated on social media.
The city of Kryvyi Rih reduced water consumption after the dam burst. More than 600,000 people live there. “Sometimes the water is only used for circulation and reaches a maximum of the first two floors of the houses,” said Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the military administration of Kryvyi Rih, according to the telegram channel “Strana”.
The restrictions should only apply at night. “During the day there will be water. The situation is not easy, but it is under control,” he continued. 70 percent of the water used in Kryvyi Rih comes from the Kakhovka reservoir. Due to the destruction of the dam, the city is facing major supply problems.
Long queues formed outside the shops as residents tried to get bottled water. Video footage on Telegram also showed how the tide at the Dnieper River rose to the roofs of houses – and even higher. Entire houses were swept away by the floods.
