Netflixing before going to sleep is less harmful than you think

The serial marathon before falling asleep has no effect on sleep, according to a new study from the University of Freiburg in the journal “Sleep Medicine.” As long as the series doesn’t end with a cliffhanger – and even then the impact on sleep is minimal.

“We were very surprised by the results,” said study leader Björn Rasch when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday. Excitement is actually associated with more sleep problems, a longer time to fall asleep or problems staying asleep.

The research shows that binge-watching an exciting series before bedtime increases the feeling of stress. In contrast, the physiological arousal symptoms such as an accelerated heart rate or an increase in cortisol levels were not observed until the series ended with a cliffhanger – at the climax of the action. “After a cliffhanger, the time the study participants spent in deep sleep decreased,” explains Rasch. “But we expected a stronger effect.” (aeg/sda)
