“Next level.”
Emily’s emails to me are getting shorter and shorter. No “Hey, I found you a new TikTok challenge”No “You have to try this recipe!”; not even ‘I’m almost there. And then I thought of you! Haha”. No, meanwhile I get two words: Next. levels.
And the next level the next stage – which will be discussed – looks like this:
@bayashi.tiktok #tiktokfood ♬ Ultimate Life Hacks – Kelly – The Life Bath
OK. That’s actually pretty impressive. But bayashi – that is the name of the Japanese gentleman – after all, he is also a professional cook; an online star with 41.6 million followers on TikTok, 9.6 million subscribers on YouTube and 1.3 million Insta followers. craziness. And, oh yes, he knows his stuff – which can be verified on countless videos.
I on the other hand am a fucking amateur, only have a few thousand Insta followers, definitely don’t have a YouTube channel and not even a TikTok account to check what my teenage daughter is doing there. Most importantly, I have pretty much zero-nada experience with desserts, let alone chocolate pudding. Anyway…
Well, quite a lot difficult, as it turns out. Although what wobbled out of my milk carton was anything but difficult used to be. But I didn’t just let that sit on me. A second attempt was necessary. Ah, see for yourself:
In my defense, I must state that my failure is not (as my daughter eloquently suggested) solely due to my culinary ineptitude. I’ve searched all Bayashi channels but couldn’t find an exact guide to the recipe anywhere. No quantities, nothing. One of the consequences of this was that the wrong type of gelling agent was initially used. (HOW SHOULD I KNOW THAT?)

My second attempt also leaves a lot to be desired, but at least you could eat it.
On a hypothetical third try, I would use 1) more chocolate powder and 2) more gelling agent,…
…but chocolate buffalo pudding isn’t so great that I want to try it a third time. Sorry Bayashi. Sorry, tick tock.

No, not looking good dear TikTok.
